Canada V0P 1X0 Phone/Fax: (250) 934-6570 e-mail: greatwalk@greatwalk.com Please note: Entry deadline is May 22, 2000 June 3, 2000 marks the twenty third year of the GREAT WALK, an annual fund raising event sponsored by the Tahsis Lions Club. It takes place on the 63.5 kilometres of gravel logging road between Gold River and Tahsis on Vancouver Island and covers what we believe to be some of the most rugged and beautiful country in the world. For a look at the elevation profile of the Great Walk route please click here. Last year more than $95,200 was pledged to the B.C. Lions Society for Children with Disabilities and many other worthwhile charities. Walkers who choose to do so solicit sponsors for the charities of their choice; others just walk for the challenge. Once again this year, the GREAT WALK has been sanctioned by the Canadian Volkssport Federation and is eligible for credit towards their IVV Achievement Awards program. Please note that it is not necessary to be a Volkssporter to participate in this event. If you would like more information about the Canadian Volkssport Federation, please contact Dave Nash in Sooke at 250-642-4515 or email at nashramblers@hotmail.com . The GREAT WALK starts at 4:00 AM near Gold River and we reserve the right to pick up and bring in any walkers not recorded in by 8:00 PM. Early bird registration (until March 15, 2000) is $35 and advance registration (March 16, 2000 until April 30, 2000) is $45. Regular registration (May 1, 2000 until midnight May 22, 2000) is $55. There will be no registrations accepted after midnight May 22, 2000. All walkers receive a GREAT WALK T-shirt for making it halfway (Checkpoint 6) and the coveted Burning Boot Plaque for completing the route. There are a total of twelve check-points along the way, handing out sandwiches, drinks and moral support! Special trophies are presented at the awards ceremony that starts at 9:00 PM. Ground transportation between Campbell River, Gold River and Tahsis is available, at additional cost, before and after the GREAT WALK. Accommodations, especially at Tahsis and Gold River, start to book up quickly once the entry forms have been mailed out. However, there are also options to stay at Strathcona Park Lodge or even in Campbell River. Charter bus service will be available for a minimal cost to get you from Campbell River, Strathcona Park Lodge or Tahsis to the start line before the Walk and back afterwards. Please note that the Gold River Tahsis road will be officially closed to all regular traffic from 4:00 am to 4:00 pm on June 3, 2000.
